Though many of us are aware that it is best to visit a dentist twice a year, floss and brush our teeth twice a day, we fail to put this healthy practice in our daily lives. People having a craze for candy, sweets and sugar beverages, feign shock and amazement when a dentist tells them that they have cavities. To minimize the risk of getting cavities it is best to take some preventive measures in our daily life.
-
Brush your teeth 3 times a day, or after meals and snacks as required. It is important especially to brush right before bedtime. Pay attention to getting rid of the food particles stuck between your teeth.
-
When brushing, brush down on the upper teeth and brush up on the lower teeth, using a circular motion. Also, brush the inner as well as the outer surface of your teeth, and before you brush each time, carefully brush your tongue.
-
Clean your tongue as well when you brush. Bacteria accumulate on the tongue and can contribute to the foul smell when you breathe or open your mouth.
-
Flossing is highly recommended over toothpicks to remove small left-over food particles between your teeth.
-
It is wise not to eat sweet snacks during the day, but only after dinner. Sugary foods attack your teeth 20 minutes after you finish eating them. If you eat something sweet after dinner, you are more likely to brush your teeth soon after, as oppose to during the day.
-
Chew sugarless gum or suck sugarless mint as this helps promote good dental hygiene and help to reduce cavities. Sugarless gum helps produce salvia, which turns out to be a natural mouth rinse and it can prove to be a worthwhile alternative if you cannot brush your teeth after eating.
-
Try to use organic toothpaste, one that's completely safe and free of harsh abrasives or strong antiseptics. Baking soda has been found to be a very effective substitute for toothpaste, although it has a very strong taste. Use a mouthwash and toothpaste with fluoride in it every day. Fluoride helps to maintain strong and healthy teeth.
-
Drinking lots of water not only proves to be as effective as flossing, it also keeps you away from drinking all those sugary drinks that make your teeth more prone to cavities. Water gets in between teeth, removes small dirt and stops sugar from doing as much damage as it can.
-
Change your toothbrush every two months to ensure that you get maximum protection by your brushing regime. Bristles of the toothbrush get splayed and tend to hurt the gums and are less effective in removing plaque. It becomes important to change the toothbrush in order to keep the dental health at optimum level.
