Health and Fitness (25th Jun - 8th Jul) | Exercise - The key to physical fitness

Studies done by numerous experts and researchers on the topic exercise suggest that exercise helps an individual to work efficiently and be more energetic at work, at play, as well as with family. The key to feel better, full of life and active is none other than the old-fashioned technique called exercise.

People often think of exercise as something to further their health and appearance- but this does not have to be true. Research on exercise has proven that it helps to improve your mental productivity and is very important for people who work at computers or other sedentary jobs.

Studies on large populations have discovered that exercise is one of the best solutions to prevent one from chronic health conditions as well as to help boost ones confidence and self-esteem. Additionally, those who are the most fit have the lowest death rates.

Here are a few ways in which exercising proves to be beneficial for you:

  • Exercising lifts up your mood – Being active lowers the level of stress, helps enhance your self-confidence and improves concentration. It puts your mind in a healthier state. A workout at the gym or a brisk 30-minute walk can help you calm down. Exercise stimulates various brain chemicals, which may leave you feeling happier and more relaxed than you were before you worked out. Exercise even reduces feelings of depression and anxiety.
  • Exercise can mean “having fun” – If the thought of the word exercise makes you cringe, banish it from your vocabulary. Substitute "activity" or even "fun activity." Exercising doesn’t necessarily mean working out or going to the gym. Dancing, local climbing wall or hiking trail are other forms of exercise that can be real fun. Push your kids on the swings or climb with them on the jungle gym. Plan a neighborhood kickball or touch football game. Find an activity you enjoy, and go for it. If you get bored, try something new. If you're moving, it counts!
  • It makes you look younger! Exercise relaxes you and reduces stress. This makes you look, feel younger, more youthful. Physical fitness promotes youthfulness. Regular exercise relaxes tensed muscles, including facial muscles where tension is aging, thus making you look younger.
  • Exercise combats chronic diseases -Being active can help control weight, and reduce the risk of high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease, some cancers, stroke and osteoporosis (bone loss).
  • It promotes better sleep - You may find you sleep better at night when you move your body consistently during the day. Regular exercise can help you fall asleep faster and deepen your sleep.  Better sleep contributes even more energy at work.
  • Regular exercise helps to manage weight – the only key to weight loss is burning the extra calories in your body and that can be achieved by exercising. The more intensely you exercise, the more calories you burn — and the easier it is to keep your weight under control.
  •  Take the stairs instead of the elevator. Walk during your lunch break. Do jumping jacks during commercials. Better yet, turn off the TV and take a brisk walk. Dedicated workouts are great, but activity you accumulate throughout the day helps you burn calories, too.

30 minutes of moderate physical activity like swimming, walking, dancing or playing golf is recommended by medical experts. If it is not possible to fit 30 minutes in your daily lifestyle, health benefits can still be gained from small periods of activity as brief as 10 minutes, if these add up to 30 minutes in total on most days. Even small things like taking the stairs instead of the lift can help make you more active.
